Roman Catholic Church Turns Drama Queen
Parliament’s decision not to amend the Equality Act (sexual orientation) Regulations should be a big dose of reality for the Roman Catholic Church. A religion that has been steeped in controversy over child sexual abuse claims in recent years, obviously believing that all gay people have the same urges as the priests who have molested young people in their congregations. That would be no! Most gay people are just like straight people, they have a partner they love, and home that would welcome a child that they are otherwise unable to have themselves because of the sexual path they walk.
I appreciate that the Catholic Church is a little behind the times and still believes that being gay is a lifestyle choice, rather like choosing what kind of car to drive, but it’s about time it opened its eyes. Homosexuality isn’t chosen, and it’s not contagious. It’s something you’re born with. Living in a home with a gay couple won’t make a straight child gay unless the child already possesses the genes! There are too many children needing a home, and the adoption process needs to have an equal playing field so that all people who are capable of offering a good home to a child who needs it has the same chance of doing so.
And what about the children? Don’t children living in care deserve a loving home with parents who care about them? Don’t they deserve better than the system can provide? Why is it that the Church thinks it’s better that a child live in a home where it’s given nothing more than the bare essentials, rather than living in a home with two mothers or two fathers? Would it prefer it if that child was adopted by a straight couple who were addicted to crack cocaine? Threatening to close its adoption agencies on principle is a bit of a drama queen tactic to get publicity to its cause – there are many ways they could quietly block any couple from adopting a child if it chose to do so, as plenty of unsuccessful straight childless couples have found out!
The children who are in the care of a same sex couple will only experience prejudice and bullying at school as long as there are narrow-minded bigots being influenced by public institutions who should be doing more to enable harmony than create publicity making controversy. Children don’t need controversy – they need unconditional love and if there are gay people out there who can provide that, the Church needs to leave well alone and deal with the mess-ups that their own priests have made with regards to their dealings with children.
